My Top 20 Favorite Gymnastics Beam Routines

1. Nastia Liukin - USA - 2008 Pacific Rim Championships - Team Finals

This is the best beam routine Nastia has ever done. That stuck dismount was amazing. We don’t see her stick her dismount a lot. Nastia has a calm style on beam. It’s a shame her “Liukin” skill isn’t in the Code of Points anymore. It was really pretty.

My Top 20 Favorite Gymnastics Beam Routines

2. Shannon Miller - USA - 1996 Olympics - Event Finals

Shannon was a rock on beam all throughout Atlanta. She always hit, she was very consistent. This title was hers to win. Although, I am wondering why “the Miller” is not in the Code of Points anymore.

My Top 20 Favorite Gymnastics Beam Routines

3. Anna Pavlova - RUS - 2004 Olympics - All Around

Anna has a pretty style on beam. I haven’t seen her hit this routine like this ever since Athens. It’s a shame. Anna is a wonderful gymnast, but she hasn’t been as successful since 2004.

My Top 20 Favorite Gymnastics Beam Routines

4. Samantha Shapiro - USA - 2008 Pacific Rim Championships - Team Final

I love this routine. She comes from the same gym as Mattie Larson and Mckayla Maroney. She has a unique mount, great execution, she’s always pointing her toes, she even points her toes on her double pike dismount.

My Top 20 Favorite Gymnastics Beam Routines

5. Lilia Podkopayeva - UKR - 1996 Olympics - Event Finals

I love Lilia on beam. She has the difficulty, but she also sort of dances on balance beam. You don’t see a gymnast really dance on beam these days (the only other gymnast I’ve seen do that is Peng Peng Lee of Canada). I originally was going to use a different routine because the commentators were still creaming their pants over Shannon Miller during Lilia’s routine, but she hit her dismount here so I had to use it.

My Top 20 Favorite Gymnastics Beam Routines

6. Liu Xuan - CHN - 2000 Olympics - Event Finals

I really like this routine. Liu Xuan went to the Olympics in Atlanta, then was put on the team in Sydney for her experience. Two of her teammates had already medaled on bars. This was her last shot for an individual medal of her own, and it was a gold one.

My Top 20 Favorite Gymnastics Beam Routines

7. Zhang Nan - CHN - 2003 Worlds - Event Finals

I really liked her in Athens. She was a quiet but consistent gymnast. Her beam routine is better here than it was in Athens, though. I remember she had a balance check after her sheep jump and couldn’t connect it to the Rufolva.

My Top 20 Favorite Gymnastics Beam Routines

8. Fan Ye - CHN - 2003 Worlds - Event Finals

I always love watching China on beam. Chinese gymnasts have a pretty style when they compete on beam. They’re a little like Romanian gymnasts, in the sense that they hardly fall. This routine is awesome. I saw zero balance checks, no mistakes whatsoever, she hit every skill, and stuck the dismount. You can see why she won the gold medal.

My Top 20 Favorite Gymnastics Beam Routines

9. Jordyn Wieber - USA - 2011 American Cup

I like watching Jordyn on beam. She has a little Shawn in her in the way she attacks this event. She has great skills, like that standing full before her dismount, and here she stuck her dismount cold. Now, I don’t know about you, but it’s weird for me to see a gymnast like Jordyn, who’s more powerful than graceful, do a twisting dismount. I expected a full twisting double back or a Patterson.

My Top 20 Favorite Gymnastics Beam Routines

10. Aliya Mustafina - RUS - 2010 Worlds - Team Final

I really like this girl. She has a lot of potential. People compare her to Khorkina, and based on her attitude, I agree. But if we’re comparing her style in gymnastics, I’d compare her more to Galiyeva. She has a quick pace on balance beam, and she’s very confident. I kind of wish her form was better on her dismount, though.
